What do they mean? The moai and ceremonial sites are along the coast, with a concentration on Easter Island's southeast coast. Here, the moai are more 'standardized' in design, and are believed to have been carved, transported, and erected between AD and They stand with their backs to the sea and are believed by most archaeologists to represent the spirits of ancestors, chiefs, or other high-ranking males who held important positions in the history of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, the name given by the indigenous people to their island in the s.
Archaeologist Jo Anne Van Tilburg , who has studied the moai for many years, believes the statues may have been created in the image of various paramount chiefs. They were not individualized portrait sculptures, but standardized representations of powerful individuals.

I think I may have a good idea off the statues purpose. They are all ona volcanic island, the have bodies buried in the ground. Maybe they were used to measure the lava flow. That could be why they are facing the flat city. They are the warning to leave if the volcano ever blew…. Interesting Article. I wondered the same in my younger age for the Easter Island Statues. As with many things on Earth, time took its toll on the statues and buried them in sediment and rocks, hiding and preserving the torsos of the Easter Island heads. Through this work, the team excavated several of the heads to reveal the underlying torso and body. In total, the team documented and studied almost 1, statues on the small Pacific Island. The project spanned 9 years whereby the team determined to the best of their ability the meaning, function and history of each individual statue.
After approvals, the archaeologists excavated two of the Easter Island heads to reveal their torso and truncated waist. The heads had been covered by successive mass transport deposits on the island that buried the statues lower half. These events enveloped the statues and gradually buried them to their heads as the islands naturally weathered and eroded through the centuries.
Easter Island is situated within the Nazca Plate and is a volcanic hot spot, similar to the Hawaiian Island chain. Easter Island was formed by successive Pliocene and Holocene volcanic flows consisting of basalt and andesite. It is thought the monuments represent ancestors and were linked to ritual activity, forming a focal point for communities, but the reason for their locations was previously a mystery.
While studies have suggested the sites might have been chosen because of a link to key resources, the team says the latest research is the first attempt to scrutinise such claims. The team focused on the east of the island, where various resources have been well mapped, and looked at the distribution of 93 megalithic platforms constructed before European sailors turned up in the 18th century.
After finding no link to the proximity of rock used for tools or for the monuments, they looked at whether the ahu were found near other important resources: gardens spread with stones in which crops like sweet potatoes were grown, sites linked to fishing, and sources of fresh water.
Lipo said he became interested in the latter after he and his colleagues began delving into where those living on Rapa Nui got their drinking water from. However, fresh water passes through the ground into aquifers, seeping into caves as well as emerging around the coast.
