Twenty-one years ago today, on March 21, , Nickel Creek released their self-titled debut album on Sugar Hill Records.
Produced by Alison Krauss , the project spawned three singles and earned the group their first Grammy Awards nomination, for Best Bluegrass Album. Nickel Creek, a trio made up of siblings Sean Watkins and Sara Watkins , along with Chris Thile , formed in and began performing around their home in southern California; at the time, Sean Watkins was 12, Sara Watkins was eight, and Thile turned eight that year as well.
Throughout the '90s, the threesome performed at bluegrass festivals all over the country and released two independent albums. It was at one of their shows that they met Krauss, who signed on to produce what became their freshman major-label record. Nickel Creek toured throughout much of , including serving as the opening act at several shows with Lyle Lovett.
Distinguished by their youth and eclectic taste, Nickel Creek became a word-of-mouth sensation on the progressive bluegrass scene and soon found their appeal spreading beyond the genre's core audience.
They met while watching the local band Bluegrass Etc. A bluegrass promoter liked the idea of such a young band, and thus Nickel Creek were formed, with Thile 's father Scott joining them on bass.
Nickel Creek were regulars on the festival circuit through most of the '90s, and during that time, Thile recorded two solo albums, 's Leading Off.. Krauss produced their self-titled debut album, which was released in ; with the kids apparently all right, Scott subsequently retired from the band. Nickel Creek released their sophomore set, This Side , in ; it debuted in the Top 20 of the pop charts and went all the way to number two on the country listings.
Even more eclectic than its predecessor, the Krauss -produced album turned indie rock fans' heads with a cover of Pavement 's "Spit on a Stranger. In mid, Nickel Creek announced they would be taking an indefinite hiatus following a scheduled tour the next year so the bandmembers could concentrate on solo work.
Thile eventually formed Punch Brothers , releasing a debut album, Punch , on Nonesuch in Over the next few years, the members of the trio continued to record, with Thile particularly prolific. Early in , Nickel Creek announced they were launching a reunion to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
A new album called A Dotted Line appeared on Nonesuch on April 1, , and the group supported the record with an extensive tour. AllMusic relies heavily on JavaScript.
